Standard Test Method for Cast Iron Analysis with ASTM E1999 Spark Atomic Emission Spectrometer

Developed by the American Testing and Materials Authority (ASTM), the ASTM E1999 standard provides a test procedure for accurately determining the chemical composition of cast iron alloys to ensure desired metallurgical properties. This procedure is suitable for production control and inspection tests. The full name of the standard is as follows: ASTM E1999 Standard test method for cast iron analysis with Spark atomic emission spectrometer.

Standard Test Method for Cast Iron Analysis with ASTM E1999 Spark Atomic Emission Spectrometer

This test method analyzes cast iron analysis for sparkling atomic emission spectrometry for the following elements in the standard ranges: carbon, chromium, copper, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, phosphorus, silicon, sulfur, tin, titanium and vanadium. The table contains the applicable range percentage and quantitative range percentage for each element.

The ranges of the listed elements are determined by test or reference materials. These ranges can be extended using appropriate reference materials.

This test method involves the analysis of samples with a diameter sufficient to cover the spark stand aperture (eg to make an argon seal). Sample thickness should be sufficient to prevent overheating during excitation. A heat sink support can be used here. The maximum thickness value is limited only by the height allowed by the stand.

Cast irons are iron carbon alloys that contain more than 2 percent carbon in their content. Its melting temperature is 1150 degrees and it is lower than steel. In general, cast iron is a preferred material in kitchenware production. Because it is easy to process and is highly heat resistant. It also dissipates and transmits heat very well and its content is non-toxic. Cast iron utensils are made of raw cast iron as well as covered with a protective layer.
