The method is applicable to all oxide coatings created by anodizing aluminum and its alloys by casting or forging, and is suitable for most aluminum alloys with a copper content of more than 6%.
The anodic oxidation coating on a weighed test piece of known surface area is dissolved without significant damage to the base metal using a mixture of phosphoric acid and chromium(VI) oxide at the specified concentration.
After the coating dissolves, the test piece is weighed again and the mass loss is calculated. Mass loss relates to the unit area covered by the coating and is expressed as milligrams of coating per square meter of surface.
The standard provides a detailed procedure for applying the gravimetric method. This typically involves preparing the sample, anodizing it under certain conditions, and then accurately measuring the mass gain resulting from the formation of the anodic coating.
