This standard specifies procedures for determining the instrumental color difference (CIELAB) of an organic coating on a metallic substrate compared to another coating used as a reference (often referred to as a reference) and metamerism due to illuminator.
When two color samples have the same spectral reflectance curves, they match under any illuminator regardless of their spectral characteristics. This is called "spectral matching". It is also possible for two color samples with different spectral reflectance curves to match visually under a particular light source, but not under another light source with different spectral characteristics; such pairings are called "metameric". A quantitative definition of metamerism is the so-called "metamerism index."
Organic coatings that produce fluorescence or are multicolored, pearlescent or metallic are excluded from this method. The creation of a reference and the size of an acceptable color difference are not within the scope of this method.
The metamerism index will show whether a result different from that specified for color difference measurement under another illuminator is obtained. First measure the color coordinates of the reference (or recall if already registered in the equipment), and then the color coordinates of the test sample are measured.
Textured and embossed overlays should be measured with an integrated globe or 45° circular/peripheral illumination. An average result can be obtained by rotating the samples three times by 90° to obtain four measurements.
