This European Standard specifies the technical requirements for high-strength structural bolt assemblies to ensure preload suitability of bolted connections in metallic structures.
A conformity test is specified to check the behavior of structural bolt assemblies to ensure that the required preload can be reliably achieved with adequate margins against overtightening and failure with the tightening methods specified in EN 1090-2.
However, it is important for the performance of the assembly to avoid mixing the components of both systems. Therefore, bolts and nuts for both systems are standardized in a single part of this European Standard and the marking of the components of the same system is the same.
Preloaded bolt-on assemblies are very sensitive to variations in manufacturing and lubrication. It is therefore important that the bolt assemblies are supplied by a single manufacturer who is always responsible for the functionality of the bolt assemblies.
The functionality of the bolt assemblies, as well as the mechanical properties of the components, require that the specified preload be achieved if the bolt assemblies are tightened in an appropriate procedure. To this end, a test method has been established for the suitability of bolt assemblies for preloading, which will demonstrate whether the bolt assemblies are functional.
The finish and coating will be as specified in the relevant part of this standard. The coatings of all components of a bolt assembly must be compatible and have similar corrosion resistance. The coating of each component will be under the control of the manufacturer.
All components shall be supplied to the purchaser in their original unopened, single-sealed packaging or, alternatively, bolts, nuts, washers and, if applicable, direct tension gauges, in separate sealed packages from the same manufacturer of the bolt assemblies.
