EN ISO 6508-3 specifies a method for the calibration of reference blocks to be used for indirect and daily verification of Rockwell hardness testing machines as specified in EN ISO 6508-2.
It is noted that the use of hard metal for the ball recessed parts is considered the standard type of Rockwell recessed balls.
Calibration is crucial to ensure the accuracy and reliability of hardness measurements obtained using the Rockwell method.
In the context of Rockwell hardness testing, reference blocks are used as a tool for verifying and calibrating the testing machine. The hardness values of these blocks are known and the testing machine is adjusted or calibrated based on the measurements obtained from these reference blocks.
The thickness of each hardness reference block shall not be less than 6 mm. Thicker blocks should be used to minimize the effect of hardness change with increasing number of indentations. Reference blocks shall be free of magnetization. It is recommended that the manufacturer ensure that blocks made of steel are demagnetized at the end of the manufacturing process (before calibration).
The thickness during calibration should then be marked on the block to the nearest 0,1 mm or an identifying mark should be made on the test surface to verify that no material has been removed from the reference block.
