The vocabulary does not include definitions and terms relating to porcelain and vitreous enamel, thermally sprayed coatings and hot-dip galvanizing, for which specialized glossaries and glossaries exist or are being prepared. Fundamental terms defined in chemistry and physics handbooks and dictionaries, which often have the same meaning as in other areas of technology in surface treatment, are not included.
The terms and definitions in this document apply to electroplating and other related surface finishing processes. Terms and definitions are not necessarily arranged in English alphabetical order. Related terms that present different alternatives for a particular process are grouped under a main term, for example "chemical coating", "electrodeposition", "sandblasting", "cleaning" or "colour anodized aluminium".
Basic terms and definitions regarding corrosion and electrochemical techniques used in corrosion science are given in ISO 8044 and are not included. Fundamental terms used in chemistry, electrochemistry or physics are also not included in this document. Definitions of such terms can be found in chemistry or physics handbooks or dictionaries.
