ISO 7802 specifies a method for determining the ability of metallic wire of diameter or thickness, including 0,1 mm to 10 mm, to undergo plastic deformation during winding.
The wrap test consists of winding a wire around a mandrel of the diameter specified in the relevant Standard with a specified number of turns to form a closely wound helix. It can also include a specific order of winding and unwinding, or even rewinding.
The testing machine should be constructed in such a way that the tan wire is wound in a spiral around the mandrel, with the adjacent windings of the coil in contact. A piece of wire to be tested may be used as a mandrel provided it has the specified mandrel diameter and sufficient stiffness.
A tensile stress not exceeding 5% of the rated tensile strength of the wire may be applied during winding to ensure tight winding.
When unwind or unwind and rewind is specified, the speed should be slow enough to avoid any temperature rise likely to affect the test result. At the end of the thawing process, at least one turn should not be opened.
The interpretation of the wrap test is done according to the requirements of the relevant Standard. When these requirements are not specified, the absence of Visible Cracks without the use of magnification aids is considered sufficient proof that the test piece has stood the test. Wire with a thickness or diameter of less than 0,5 mm will be examined at approximately 10 times magnification.
