This standard aims to test metals and alloys for compliance with composition specifications. These tests must be carried out in skilled and reliable authorized laboratories.

This test method enables simultaneous detection of 21 alloys and residual elements in carbon and low-alloy steels with spark emission vacuum spectrometry in mass fraction ranges in the standard. These alloys and elements are as follows: aluminum, antimony, arsenic, boron, calcium, carbon, chromium, cobalt, copper, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, niobium, nitrogen, phosphorus, silicon, sulfur, tin, titanium, vanadium and zirconium. In the standard for each of these alloys and elements, the applicable composition range mass fraction and quantitative composition range mass fraction percentages are given in a table.

This test method involves the analysis of samples with a diameter sufficient to cover the spark stand aperture. Sample thickness may vary depending on the design of the spectrometer stand, but is usually between 10 and 38 millimeters.

This test method covers routine control analysis and analysis of the machined material in iron and steel production activities and is designed for cold cast, rolled and forged samples.
