ASTM G31 Immersion Corrosion Test of Metals

Immersion corrosion testing is used to determine a material's resistance to an aggressive, aqueous environment. Standard laboratory corrosion coupons are used to determine weight loss due to corrosion. The ASTM G31 test method normalizes corrosion rates to time units, typically in mm/year or miles/year (mpy). Test terms vary, but results are usually available within a 24-hour, 10- or 20-day exposure cycle. Test temperature and oxygen availability variables are also test-specific.

After testing, gravimetric analysis provides the corrosion weight. Surface analysis can also be done with stereo microscopy or scanning electron microscopy to further investigate post-test morphology.

Corrosion Test Standards

  • ASTM A262, Practice A, B, C, and F - Intergranular corrosion testing
  • ASTM G28, Method A - Determination of susceptibility to intergranular corrosion
  • ASTM G48, Methods A, B, and C - Resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion

Accelerated Corrosion Test;
Accelerated corrosion testing is used for a variety of purposes to simulate the conditions a product will be exposed to under real service conditions. Because the performance of a product is often linked to the service environment in which it is placed, it is extremely important that products are manufactured with various aspects of harsh weather and corrosive environmental conditions in mind.

The application of laboratory corrosion exposure testing gives manufacturers and suppliers an enhanced advantage over the limitations of ingredients used in manufactured products before they are purchased and/or incorporated into a larger component of the final product. This forward-thinking approach not only limits the time, energy and revenue spent on poor quality products, but also limits the risk of losing market position, clientele and customers due to poor product performance. In summary, accelerated corrosion testing is used to induce corrosion and failure in a relatively short period of time compared to corrosion produced as a natural occurrence. This gives decision makers the tools to fine-tune, redesign using alternative materials, or completely eliminate a particular supplier with poor quality products.
