This part of this European Standard specifies requirements for mass other properties and tests of non-ferrous metal coatings on steel wire and circular or other cross-section steel wire products.
This European Standard deals with general application requirements and is used for coatings for which no specific requirements are specified in the following sections. Deviations are possible, especially if necessary for well-defined products. In such a case the appropriate requirements will be part of the relevant product standard.

The adhesion wrapping test will be carried out in accordance with EN 10218-1 and the coating will adhere to the steel underneath the coating. The veneer strips should not crack or separate so much that they can be removed by rubbing them with fingers. Flaking or removal during testing of small particles resulting from mechanical polishing of the coating surface or contact with forming equipment will not be considered a reason for rejection.
The mass of the coating will be determined using a gravimetric method. The metallic coating on a surface of known area is melted in a suitable solution to completely remove the coating without damaging the surface of the steel wire. If necessary, a suitable inhibitor is added to the solution. The resulting mass loss is determined by weighing the test piece before and after melting of the coating.
