ASTM A255 Standard Test Methods for Determining the Hardenability of Steel

Developed by the American Testing and Materials Agency (ASTM), the ASTM A255 standard defines and describes test methods for determining the hardenability of steels. The full name of the standard is as follows: ASTM A255 Standard test methods for determining the hardenability of steel. During this test, one end of an inch-diameter cylindrical test sample is quenched with water and the curing response is measured as a function of distance from the quenched tip.

ASTM A255 Standard Test Methods for Determining the Hardenability of Steel

Within the framework of this standard, two test methods are described to determine the hardenability of steels: a quantitative end quenching test (or Jominy test) and a test method to calculate the hardenability of steel from the chemical composition.

The choice of test methods to be used to determine the hardenability of a particular steel is decided between the supplier and the user.

The calculation method included in these test methods is valid only for chemical compositions such as carbon, manganese, silicon, nickel, chromium, molybdenum, copper and vanadium.

Hardenability is a measure of the depth at which steel will harden when quenched at high temperatures. This value is measured quantitatively. In general, in a standard quenching, the degree or depth of hardening of a standard size and the shape of the test sample is recorded. The depth of curing in the quenching test is the distance from the quenched tip associated with a given hardness level along the sample. Values shown in inches in the standard are considered standard. The values given in parentheses are for information purposes.

The hardness of the steel refers to its ability to withstand deformation when a load is applied. Hardenability, on the other hand, refers to the ability to harden to a certain depth under certain conditions. The results from this test allow the selection of a suitable combination of alloy steel and heat treatment to minimize thermal stresses and distortions while producing components of different sizes.
