Developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), the ISO 6892-1 standard describes the tensile testing method of metallic materials and describes the mechanical properties that can be determined at room temperature. In addition, there are additional suggestions for computer-controlled testing machines in the standard annex. This standard was published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute with the following title: TS EN ISO 6892-1 Metallic materials - Tensile test - Part 1: Test method at ambient temperature.
The shape and dimensions of the test pieces can be limited by the shape and dimensions of the metallic material from which these pieces are taken. The test piece is usually obtained by a sample of the material, or a pressed blank or cast. However, products with smooth sections (such as rods and wires) and cast test pieces (such as cast iron and non-ferrous alloys) can be tested without processing. The cross section of the test pieces can be circular, square, rectangular or annular. Parts tested according to the standard should have a certain ratio between the original size length and the original cross-sectional area.
Tensile tests are carried out to determine how the materials behave under the tensile load. In a simple tensile test, a material sample is drawn towards the breaking point to determine the ultimate tensile strength, and the amount of force applied and the elongation of the material are measured during the test. Material properties are generally expressed as tension (force per unit area) and strain (percentage change in length. Test and measurement processes vary according to the material tested and its intended use.
