British Standards Institute (BSI) The BS 4449 standard developed by is a British material standard for concrete reinforcement carbon steel bars used for reinforcement application.

BS 4449 Concrete Reinforcing Steels - Weldable Reinforcing Steel - Rod, Roll and Decorated Product - Specification

The steel reinforcement standard in question clearly defines the melting process and oxidation type of steel, at the discretion of the steel manufacturer. Two main methods are generally applied to produce both steel (billet) and the final product (rod or coil). These methods differ worldwide due to raw material availability, developments in production technologies and production costs.

Steel rods are important engineering materials for structural application. In both developed and developing countries, the steel industry is considered one of the most prominent points of industrialization and economic growth. Steel products find application in building and construction, oil and gas, mining, telecommunications, automobiles and many other industries.

Steel rods are used as reinforcements in concrete to support buildings and other critical structures. Because it adheres strongly to concrete, its expansion thermal coefficient is very close to concrete and has good welding holding properties. Therefore, strengthening the steel bar plays an important role as a building material.

It is important to investigate the mechanical and chemical properties of reinforced steel bars, especially produced from scrap metals. In authorized institutions, chemical composition analyzes and mechanical tests (such as yield strength, final tensile strength and percent elongation amount) are carried out. Optical emission spectrometry and universal testing machines are used for these tests. The hardness values of the samples are obtained by converting the tensile strength based on the current correlation. The carbon content, hardness values, yield, ultimate tensile strength and ductility properties of steel bars are compared with the BS 4449 standard criteria.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of metallic testing services, there are also BS 4449 standard tests.
