The tester for Leeb hardness testing consists of an impact device and an electronic measurement and display unit to determine the impact and rebound velocity.
Leeb hardness testing can be performed on specimens of different shapes as long as design-specific stop caps can be securely placed on the specimen.
The test should be performed at room temperature between 10°C and 35°C. The sample temperature can affect the Leeb hardness test. For temperatures outside this range, the temperature should be specified in the test report.
It should be ensured that the sample does not slip during the test process. If necessary, a suitable recording device should be used for this purpose. Contact surfaces must be clean and free from foreign matter (lime, oil, dirt, etc.).
Vibrations and movements of the specimen and impact device during the Leeb hardness test can affect the result and should be avoided.
The uncertainty determination approach only takes into account uncertainties associated with the overall metrological function of the hardness tester in conjunction with the hardness reference blocks. The uncertainties of the function reflect the combined effect of all individual uncertainties (indirect testing). Because of this approach, it is important that individual device components operate within tolerances. It is highly recommended to use this procedure no later than one year after successfully passing the direct exam.
