This standard specifies a method for the production of acid extracts from pigments and fillers (hereinafter referred to as pigments for simplicity of expression) for the subsequent determination of the content of metals soluble in hydrochloric acid.
In contrast to the method according to DIN ISO 6713, the content of soluble heavy metals in dry pigments is determined in this standard. Acid extracts are prepared with hydrochloric acid, c(HCl)=0.07 mol/l. In these, metal contents, defined as soluble metals in this extraction medium, are determined.
In the case of pigments that cannot be wetted using the methods specified in this standard or otherwise not included in the specified volume of hydrochloric acid, the method of producing acid extracts should be separately agreed to determine the "soluble" metal content.
The methods are not designed for pigments that are significantly soluble in hydrochloric acid, c(HCl) = 0,07 mol/l (eg, zinc oxide pigments, carbonate fillers). In this case, a larger volume of extraction liquid based on lead pigment is used and there is more than 1% solubility.
Determination of the soluble metal content is not necessary if a suitable analysis method determines that the total content of the metal in question is less than the soluble metal limit value relevant to the assessments.
