EN 10002-4 Metallic Materials - Tensile Testing - Part 4: Standard Test for Verification of Extensometers Using Uniaxial Test

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 10002-4 testing. This European Standard specifies a method for the static verification of extensometers used in uniaxial tests. The term "extensometer" means a displacement measuring device and a system for displaying or recording this displacement.

EN 10002-4 Metallic Materials - Tensile Testing - Part 4: Standard Test for Verification of Extensometers Using Uniaxial Test

Verifying an extensometer involves comparing the readings given by the extensometer with known length variations provided by a calibration apparatus.

Once the temperature has stabilized, it is recommended that the extensometer be run by the verification apparatus at least twice over the verification range of the extensometer before verification. If possible, the displacement is set to a slightly negative value and returned to zero. When appropriate, the extensometer is reset.

The time between two validations depends on the type of extensometer, the standard of care, and the number of times the extensometer is used. Under normal circumstances, verification is recommended at intervals of approximately 12 months. This interval should not exceed 18 months unless the test is expected to last more than 18 months, in which case the extensometer should be verified before and after the test.

The extensometer should be placed on the calibration apparatus in the position and orientation in which it was used during the uniaxial test to avoid errors caused by loss of balance or deformation of any part of the extensometer. The extensometer should be installed as during uniaxial testing.

The extensometer should be placed close to the calibration apparatus or mounted on it for a sufficient time before verification. The parts of the extensometer and calibration apparatus in contact must reach the verification temperature.
