This part of this European standard defines the Charpy impact test (U and V notch) for metallic materials. For certain specific metallic materials and applications, the Charpy impact test may be subject to certain standards and special requirements.
Sampling, test piece number and location shall be as specified in the relevant product standard. The standard test piece will be 55 mm long and 10 mm square in cross section. There should be a notch in the middle of the length. Two types of notches are indicated.
The test pieces should be machined all over, except in the case of precision cast casting test pieces, where two faces parallel to the plane of symmetry of the notch can be removed from the machine. The plane of symmetry of the notch should be perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the test piece.
Machining should be done in such a way that any change in the test piece, for example due to cold working or heating, is minimized. The notch should be carefully prepared so that no grooves parallel to the bottom of the notch are visible to the naked eye. The test piece may be marked on any face not in contact with supports or anvils and at a point at least 5 mm from the notch to avoid the effects of cold working due to marking.
The test piece should be placed perpendicular to the anvils with the plane of symmetry of the notch no more than 0,5 mm from the plane of symmetry of the anvils. The test piece should lie on the supports with the tip of the striker hitting the side opposite the notch of the test piece.
