It defines two methods:
While the machine is being installed or repaired, it is used firstly to the direct method and secondly to find the reason if the indirect method gives wrong results.
This standard also applies to pendulum impact machines of different capacities or designs. Pendulum impact testers validated and evaluated as satisfactory according to this standard are considered valid for impact testing with different types of notches.
The apparatus used for the direct method shall have certified traceability to the SI unit system.
Sufficient clearance must be provided to allow the broken pieces of the test piece to fall freely from the machine, with minimal intervention and without bouncing on the hammer, before the pendulum completes its swing. No part of the pendulum passing between the anvils shall be thicker than 18 mm.
The width of the scale grading marks should be uniform and the width of the pointer should be approximately equal to the width of a gradation mark. The pointer must allow a parallax-independent reading.
The resolution of the scale is considered an increment of the number on the digital display, provided that the indicator does not increase by more than one. When readings fluctuate in more than one increment, the resolution is taken equal to half the fluctuation range.
