Tubes shall be free from external and internal surface defects detectable by visual inspection. The inner and outer surface coating of the pipes will be typical of the manufacturing process and, where applicable, the heat treatment used. Normally the finish and surface condition should be such that any surface defects requiring correction can be identified.

Correction of surface defects only by grinding or machining will be permitted provided that the wall thickness in the area to be corrected is not less than the specified minimum wall thickness thereafter. All the worn areas will blend smoothly into the contour of the tube.

Three standard Charpy V-notch test pieces will be prepared according to EN 10045-1. If the wall thickness is such that standard test pieces cannot be produced without flattening the section, test pieces with a width of less than 10 mm but not less than 5 mm should be prepared; The largest achievable width shall be used.
