This European standard specifies the technical delivery conditions in two test categories for seamless pipes of circular cross section, made of non-alloy and alloy steel, with the specified low-temperature properties.
When welding pipes are manufactured in accordance with this Part of EN 10216, it should be taken into account that the behavior of the steel during and after welding depends not only on the steel, but also on the heat treatment and welding conditions applied.
The inner and outer surface coating of the tubes will be typical for the manufacturing process and applied heat treatment. Normally the finish and surface condition should be such that any surface defects or marks that require correction can be identified.
Correction of surface defects only by grinding or machining will be permitted provided that the wall thickness in the area to be corrected is not less than the specified minimum wall thickness thereafter. All the worn areas will blend smoothly into the contour of the tube.
A test unit shall consist of tubes of the same specified diameter and wall thickness, of the same grade of steel, of the same casting, of the same manufacturing process, of the same finishing in a continuous furnace or heat-treated in a batch at the same furnace charge.
The tube section should be expanded until it is broken with a conical tool. There should be no cracks or breaks on the surface outside the fracture zone. However, slight cracks on the edges are not considered grounds for rejection.
