This standard specifies the technical delivery conditions for two test categories of circular section longitudinal (SAWL) or helically (SAWH) welded pipes, made of non-alloy quality steel, with specified low temperature properties.
Tubes shall be free from external and internal surface defects detectable by visual inspection. The inner and outer surface coating of the pipes will be typical of the manufacturing process and, where applicable, the heat treatment used. Normally the finish and surface condition should be such that any surface defects requiring correction can be identified.
Only grinding or machining surface imperfections will be permitted, but once done, the wall thickness in the correction area must not be less than the specified minimum wall thickness. All worn areas should blend smoothly into the contour of the tube.
Surface imperfections exceeding the specified minimum wall thickness will be considered defects and pipes containing them will be deemed not to comply with this part of EN 10217. Repair of the weld seam is permitted according to an established and agreed procedure.
