The EN 10247 standard, which is a European standard, offers a method for micrographic examination of the non-metallic inclusion content of steels with standard pictures. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute with the following title: TS EN 10247 Micrographic examination of the non-metallic residue content of steels using standard pictures.
Non-metallic inclusions play a negative role in many important properties of steel. This situation makes it difficult to process and apply steel products. The thermodynamics of inclusion formation affects the inclusion composition, quantity and size distribution. In recent years, understanding the effects of non-metallic inclusions on steel properties has led to an increase in the studies of determining and preventing the composition, amount and distribution of these inclusions in the steel production process. For this reason, all production steps in the enterprise have been taken into account and the measures to be taken to control raw material selection, slag composition design, optimization of secondary treatment conditions, control of mold processes and re-oxidation at all stages have been standardized in steel production. The EN 10247 standard is also a result of these efforts.
Thermodynamics play a decisive role in this development. Understanding of the interaction between thermodynamics and the chemical composition of steel and slag and processing conditions has improved significantly. Existing modeling tools have also greatly improved. In this way, important information for the control of non-metallic inclusions in steel products is put on a scientific basis. These methods are now widely used in process development and adaptation of non-metallic inclusions.
