This standard of EN 10263 applies to round bars and rods and wire, of unalloyed and alloyed steel, up to and including 100 mm in diameter, intended for cold forging and cold extrusion without subsequent heat treatment on final components.

For alloy steels where available, the manufacturer has the option to verify the hardenability by calculation. The calculation method is left to the discretion of the manufacturer. If agreed upon at the time of request and order, the manufacturer will provide sufficient information about the calculation for the customer to confirm the result. If a calculation formula is not available or in dispute, a final quench hardenability test shall be carried out in accordance with EN ISO 642.
If specific testing is required, the grain size requirement should be verified by determining the aluminum content or micrographically. The fine-grained structure is normally achieved when the total aluminum content is a minimum of 0,018%. In such a case, micrographic examination is not necessary. Aluminum content will be given in the inspection certificate. Otherwise, one test piece per casting will be examined to determine the apparent austenitic grain size.
