EN 10270-2 Steel Wire for Mechanical Springs - Part 2: Oil-Hardened and Tempered Steel Spring Wire Test

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 10270-2 testing. This European Standard applies to oil-hardened and tempered spring steel wires made of unalloyed or alloyed steels. They are primarily subject to torsional stresses, such as in coil springs for compression and extension, as well as in special cases where the spring wire is subjected to bending stresses such as lever springs.

As a rule, unalloyed steels are used in applications at room temperature, while alloy steels are generally used at temperatures above room temperature. Alloy steels can also be selected for their above-average tensile strength.

This standard covers all types of hardened and tempered spring steel wires. The grade for normal applications made of unalloyed or alloyed steel has the abbreviation FD and is designed for static applications.

Spring steel wire for medium fatigue levels required for some clutch springs made of unalloyed or alloy steel has the abbreviation TD. Non-alloy steel or alloy steel spring steel wire intended for use under severe dynamic duty, such as valve springs or other springs with similar requirements, has the abbreviation VD.

Medium and high fatigue grades TD and VD are characterized by high steel cleanliness, specific chemical, mechanical and technological parameters and a well-defined surface condition in relation to the allowable depth of surface defects and decarburization.

Oil-hardened and tempered wire will be supplied in coils, on reels or in cut lengths. The wire in the coils or spools should form one continuous length. The wire in the coil may also be provided in carriers containing one or more coils.

The supplied wire units must be tightly connected to ensure that the wire spiral tubes do not pop out unexpectedly. The starting end should be marked and the wire at the coil ends should be covered with a protective cap.
