This European Standard covers grades of stainless steels used in the cold drawn condition, generally in the form of circular wire up to 10,00 mm in diameter, for the manufacture of springs and springs.
Some steel grades covered by EN 10088-3 e.g. 1.4571, 1.4539, 1.4028 are also used for springs, though to a much lesser extent. The wrap test can be applied to wire from 0,30 mm to 3,00 mm in diameter. Wire should show no signs of cracks or surface defects when tightly wound eight turns around a mandrel whose diameter is equal to the wire size.
The wire of each coil should consist of only one length of wire from heat. It should be wrapped in such a way that there is no bending. Where the wire is transmitted on reels, up to 10% of these may consist of non-spool cores or carriers, a maximum of two wire lengths. Joints should be properly constructed, appropriately marked and labeled.
