The apparatus requires a flat sample larger than the aperture, so uneven surfaces cannot be measured. This method can be applied to all pigmented and non-pigmented coatings, including metallic/pearl coatings. But it is only indicative for textured coatings.

The gloss of the organic coating is determined by measuring the specular reflection. The angle of incident light is usually 60°, but angles of 20° or 85° can be used for more accurate measurement of high or low brightness values.

Gloss can be measured in the rolling direction or perpendicular to the rolling direction. The measurement direction should be specified in the test report. Measure the brightness at ambient temperature. For more accurate measurements, the temperature according to EN 23270 will be (23 ± 2) °C and the relative humidity (50 ± 5) %, as required, for example in case of conflict.
