This European Standard, together with EN 14399-1 and EN 14399-2, specifies the requirements for the installation of high-strength structural bolts and nuts in the HR system suitable for large widths, thread sizes M12 to M36 and preloaded connections on flat surfaces.
Bolt assemblies conforming to this standard are designed to allow a preload of at least 1993 fub × As per EN 1-3 (Eurocode 0,7) and achieve ductility predominantly by plastic elongation of the bolt.
However, it is important for the performance of the assembly to avoid mixing the components of both systems. Therefore, bolts and nuts for both systems are standardized in a single part of this European Standard and the marking of the components of the same system is the same.

The functionality of the bolt assemblies, as well as the mechanical properties of the components, require that the specified preload be achieved if the bolt assemblies are tightened in an appropriate procedure. For this purpose, a test method for the suitability of bolt assemblies for preloading has been established, which will demonstrate whether the bolt assemblies are functional.
