This international standard specifies a method for determining the ability of metallic wire of diameter or characteristic size from 0,1 mm to 14 mm to undergo plastic deformation during simple torsion in one direction.
The testing machine should be constructed in such a way that the change in length between the jaws due to shrinkage of the test piece during testing is not prevented and an appropriate tensile stress can be applied to the test piece. The jaws shall be placed on the test machine in such a way that they remain on the same axis during the test and do not exert any bending force on the test piece.
One of the jaws must be able to rotate about the axis of the test piece, and the other must not be subjected to any angular deflection other than the deviation that may be necessary to measure the torque.
The distance between the jaws must be adjustable and measurable for different test piece lengths. The test speed shall be set and controlled within 10% of its nominal value and the number of turns recorded. In cases where the wire is split into more than two pieces, a protective shield shall be provided to protect the operator from flying pieces.
In this test, a wire sample is clamped at both ends and a bending force is applied to the sample until it breaks. The test is used to determine properties such as torsional strength, torsional modulus of elasticity and ductility of the wire.
