EN 15664-1 Effect of Metallic Materials on Water for Human Consumption - Dynamic Hardware Test for Evaluation of Metal Release

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 15664-1 test. This European Standard specifies a procedure for determining the release of metals from metallic materials used in construction products intended to come into contact with potable water.

EN 15664-1 Effect of Metallic Materials on Water for Human Consumption - Dynamic Hardware Test for Evaluation of Metal Release

The test can be used for three purposes:

  • To evaluate a material as a reference material for a material category using the results of various studies in different waters covering a wide range of water compositions;
  • Evaluate a material for approval through comparative testing;
  • Obtain data on the interaction of local water with a material.

The main application of metallic materials in water supply is in domestic plumbing. The test method given in this standard is designed to provide information on the release of metals from metallic materials into drinking water over time. The test is based on a program that simulates conditions in a local distribution system, based on successive periods of transient flow and stagnation once in a rig.

The test conditions are more relevant than continuous flow or settling and wetting tests and are applicable to all metallic materials in distribution systems.

Test pieces or test pipes of a material with a certain geometry and certain surface properties are installed on a test rig that is operated for a period of time under controlled conditions of water quality, temperature and flow regime.

During the entire test, water samples are taken and analyzed for the concentrations of the relevant metals at the specified operating periods after the specified stagnation periods.

Except for the tested materials, all materials used in the test equipment that come into contact with the test water shall be inert for the purposes of the test. Precautions shall be taken to ensure that there is no transformation or contamination on the surface of test pieces or pipes during installation preparation or during installation itself. The materials to be tested will be in the form of pipes or test pieces. If the material used for the test is intended for use in pipes and other applications, the material should be tested as a pipe.
