The passive state of stainless steels is the reason why no relevant amount of metal is released from these materials into drinking water. This test is used to verify whether the stainless steel in question is passive under conditions that may occur in drinking water.

When tested in a test rig as described in EN 15664-1, stainless steels show very low metal release rates and the resulting metal concentrations in water are in most cases below the detection limits of current analytical instruments. The reason for these small metal release rates is the formation of a passive layer on the surface of stainless steels.

Therefore, it was decided to test stainless steels for passive layer properties, not metal release. The material in question is tested in an electrochemical test.
