Copper shows low creep. Under the overload and temperature conditions of distribution transformer windings, the creep rates of aluminum can be 25 times higher than copper. This results in aluminum-wound distribution transformers that have a higher failure propensity than those with copper windings.

Copper wires do not have a galvanic effect because they are the same element as connectors, which are usually made of copper or brass (an alloy of copper). Aluminum loses material through the galvanic effect, resulting in loss of contact.

Copper-wound distribution transformers are always smaller and lighter than aluminum-wound ones of equivalent capacity and energy performance. Since the resistivity of copper is 0,6 times that of aluminum, the cross section of the aluminum conductor must be 1,66 times larger than that of the copper conductor for the same resistance.

This results in a larger transformer core and volume, resulting in a larger transformer tank than the copper design. While aluminum is lighter than an equal volume of copper, in distribution transformers this advantage disappears with the increased volume (and therefore weight) of the conductor, steel core, tank and oil.
