EN ISO 15329 specifies an electrochemical method for determining the susceptibility of solution heat treatable aluminum alloys, namely 2XXX, 6XXX, 7XXX and 8XXX alloys, to intergranular corrosion under various aging conditions and without protective coatings.
EN ISO 15329 is applicable to cast and forged heat-treatable aluminum alloys in the form of castings, forgings, plates, sheets, extrusions, and semi-finished or finished parts to make a comparative assessment of alloys of different grades. The test results provide information to help determine the intergranular corrosion resistance and heat treatment quality of the tested materials.
Test results cannot be considered absolute as they do not apply to all environments that can be met in service. They are best used in a relative manner to compare the intergranular corrosion resistance of various temperatures of solution heat treatable aluminum alloys.
The method is based on the principle that if an aluminum alloy is susceptible to intergranular corrosion, this sensitivity will show as a degradation during the anodic polarization of the alloy when exposed to solutions containing chloride ions.
The susceptibility of solution heat treatable aluminum alloys to intergranular corrosion depends on alloy composition, production method, solution heat treatment, quenching and artificial precipitation hardening (aging).
