EN 10002-3 Tensile Testing of Metallic Materials - Part 3: Calibration of Force Proofing Tools Used in the Verification of Uniaxial Testing Machines

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 10002-3 testing. This European standard covers the calibration of force proving devices used for the static verification of uniaxial testers (e.g. tensile testers) and describes a procedure for classification of these devices. The force proving instrument is defined as the entire assembly including the gauge from the force transducer. This European Standard is generally applied to force proving instruments where the force is determined by measuring the elastic deformation of a loaded member or a quantity proportional to it.

Calibration consists in applying precisely known forces to the loaded member and recording data from the deflection measuring system, which is considered an integral part of the force proving instrument. When an electrical measurement is made, the indicator may be replaced by an indicator that can be shown to have at least an equal measurement uncertainty.

All elements of the force proving device (including cables for electrical connection) must be individually and uniquely identified, for example by the manufacturer's name, model and serial number. The maximum operating force for the force transducer must be specified.

In general, the use of comparator force proving instruments as a means of measuring deflection is limited to the forces with which the instruments are calibrated. In fact, if the comparator is used over a long journey, it may contain large localized periodic errors that create too large an uncertainty to allow interpolation between the calibration forces. However, it can be used for interpolation if the characteristics of the comparator are predetermined and its periodic error has a negligible effect on the interpolation error of the force proving tool.

Before calibrating the force proving instrument, make sure that this instrument can be calibrated. This can be done through pretests such as those described below and given as examples.
