This standard specifies the test method for the determination of stress relaxation of metallic test pieces subjected to nominally constant strain and constant temperature conditions throughout the test.
The test involves holding a test piece at a certain temperature, subjecting it to a constant tensile stress at that temperature, and determining the residual stress values in the test piece continuously or at appropriate times throughout the test.
The extensometer should be calibrated at intervals not exceeding 3 years. If the prescribed test time exceeds the expiration date of the calibration certificate, the extensometer must be calibrated before the start of the relaxation test.
