EN ISO 16276-2 Corrosion Protection of Steel Structures with Protective Paint Systems - Part 2: Cross Cut Test and X-Cut Test

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 16276-2 testing. EN ISO 16276-2 specifies procedures for rating the resistance of pavement systems when a cut is made in the lattice pattern at right angles to the pavement (cross cut) or X (X-cut). It also specifies appropriate equipment and defines inspection areas, sampling plans, and acceptance/rejection criteria. It does not specify ratings for specific coating systems.

EN ISO 16276-2 Corrosion Protection of Steel Structures with Protective Paint Systems - Part 2: Cross Cut Test and X-Cut Test

The main purpose of this part of EN ISO 16276 is to complement the ISO 12944 series regarding site assessment and acceptance criteria of adhesion/cohesion of a coating.

Break strength testing is normally destructive and therefore requires repair work, the extent of which will depend on the specification and durability required by the protective paint coating. One purpose of this part of EN ISO 16276 is to minimize variability in the assessment of the breaking strength of a protective paint coating and to achieve uniformity in application and to establish acceptance/rejection criteria for such coatings. The method uses test equipment based on the principles of cross cut and X cut.

The resistance of coating systems to adhesion and cohesion failures from shear is evaluated using the cross-cut test or the X-shear test; where it is evaluated qualitatively using a scale of 0 to 5, with minimum to maximum damage for each method.

The cross cut method requires a cut matrix to be made across the pavement to the substrate to create double squares. The spacing of the cuts, and therefore the size of the squares, is determined by the thickness of the coating to be evaluated. Adhesive tape is applied with firm force to remove poorly adhered veneer squares after cuts are made. The result of the test is expressed as a rating relative to the observed damage.

The X-cut method requires making an X-cut through the coating using a sharp knife. The adhesive tape is applied with firm force to remove the poorly adhered coating. The result of the test is expressed as a rating relative to the observed damage.
