EN 12373-7 Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys - Evaluation of the Quality of Leakproof Anodic Oxidation Coatings by Measurement of Mass Loss

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of EN 12373-7 test. This European Standard specifies a method for assessing the quality of sealed anodic oxidation coatings on aluminum and its alloys by measuring the mass loss after immersion in a phosphoric acid/chromic acid solution with prior acid treatment.

EN 12373-7 Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys - Evaluation of the Quality of Leakproof Anodic Oxidation Coatings by Measurement of Mass Loss

A relevant standard (EN 12373-6) describes the same method used without prior acid treatment. The method can be especially applied to anodic oxidation coatings for architectural purposes. For less severe applications the method described in EN 12373-61 may be more suitable.

The method cannot be applied to:

  • Hard type anodic oxidation coatings that are not normally sealed;
  • Anodic oxidation coatings isolated in dichromate solutions only;
  • Anodic oxidation coatings produced in chromic acid solutions;
  • Anodic oxidation coatings that have undergone a treatment to make them hydrophobic.

The method is non-destructive and can serve as a reference method in case of doubt or dispute regarding the results of the loss of absorptivity (EN 12373-4) or acceptance measurement (EN 12373-5) test.

While an unsealed anodic oxidation coating on aluminum is rapidly dissolved by the acid environment, a well-sealed coating will withstand prolonged immersion without appreciable attack.

The mass loss during immersion in the specified acid solution, together with the previous acid treatment, is used as an indicator to evaluate the quality of the sealed anodic oxidation coating.

This standard probably applies to anodized coatings that have undergone a sealing process. Sealing is a post-anodizing treatment that improves the corrosion resistance and other properties of the anodic oxide layer.

This standard applies to anodized coatings on aluminum and its alloys. The method is used to evaluate the effectiveness of the sealing process, including quality control and the effect of previous acid treatment.
