ISO 965-1 specifies a tolerance system for ISO general purpose metric screw threads (M) conforming to ISO 261. The tolerance system refers to the basic profile according to ISO 68-1.
The tolerance system consists of tolerance degrees and tolerance positions. Tolerance degrees are expressed with numbers such as 4, 6 and 8. Tolerance positions are expressed with letters such as H, G, h and g. The tolerance class designation will consist of a combination of numbers and letters; for example 6H and 6g.
The complete definition of a screw thread consists of a definition for the thread system and size, a definition for the thread tolerance class and, if necessary, other individual elements.
In all cases, tolerance quality class 6 will be used for medium and normal thread engagement length. Grades below 6 are for fine or short thread engagement length with tolerance quality. Grades above 6 are for tolerance quality of coarse or long thread engagement lengths. For some grades, specific tolerance values are not shown for small pitches due to insufficient thread overlap or the requirement that the pitch diameter tolerance not exceed the top diameter tolerance.
