EN 12373-3 Aluminum and aluminum alloys - Test for Determination of Thickness of Anodic Oxidation Coatings

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of EN 12373-3 testing. This part of this European Standard specifies a non-destructive method for determining the thickness of anodic oxidation coatings on aluminum and its alloys using split beam microscopy.

EN 12373-3 Aluminum and aluminum alloys - Test for Determination of Thickness of Anodic Oxidation Coatings

The method is applicable to anodic oxidation coatings above 10 µm or above 5 µm when the surface is smooth, in most industrial cases. The use of the described method is limited by the requirement that the two luminous lines described in point 3 be visible and clearly separated, i.e. not in the case of opaque or dark coatings.

In a split-beam microscope, a parallel, layered beam of light (I) is directed obliquely towards the anodized surface, usually at an angle of incidence of 458. Part of this beam (R1) is reflected on the outer face of the coating; Another fragment, R2, penetrates the coating and occurs after reflection and two resulting refractions at the metal/coating interface.

Two parallel lines are obtained in the eyepiece; The distance between them is proportional to the thickness of the oxide coating and the magnification. This distance also depends on the refractive index (n) of the coating, which is between 1,59 and 1,62, and the geometry of the apparatus.

Calibration of the split beam microscope is crucial to obtaining accurate measurements. The standard may specify calibration procedures to ensure the reliability of measurements.

EN 12373-3 is applicable to anodized coatings on aluminum for a variety of purposes, including functional and decorative applications. The method deals with quality control and evaluation of compliance with specified thickness requirements.
