The method is not suitable for testing heat-sensitive colored anodic oxidation coatings.
The test described in this standard represents severe exposure to ultraviolet light and, due to its severity, enables a comparatively very rapid determination of the light fastness of colored anodic oxidation coatings.
However, it should be understood that the light emitted by the mercury vapor source used in the test has a discontinuous spectrum and a high content of ultraviolet radiation. Therefore, caution should be exercised in comparing the results of this test with results from sunlight exposure.
A significant amount of heat is generated by the light source and the test must be performed such that the temperature of the test pieces does not exceed 100°C during the test.
Test pieces are exposed to ultraviolet light and the resulting color changes are observed and compared to standard or control samples.
The apparatus consists of a cabinet made of suitable heat-resistant material with an ultraviolet light source and a sample holder or support arrangement placed equidistant from the light source.
EN 12373-8 provides a detailed procedure for carrying out the test. This may include preparation of samples, conditions for exposure to UV light and heat, and criteria for evaluating changes in appearance or properties.
This standard applies to colored anodic oxidation coatings on aluminum and its alloys. The method is used for quality control and to evaluate the resistance of colored coatings to environmental factors.
