EN ISO 6508-1 Rockwell Hardness Test for Metallic Materials

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN ISO 6508-1 standard. The standard covers Rockwell hardness and Rockwell surface hardness test methods for metallic materials.

EN ISO 6508-1 Rockwell Hardness Test for Metallic Materials

This part of ISO 6508 specifies the method for Rockwell regular and Rockwell surface hardness tests for metallic scales A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, K, 15N, 30N, 45N, 15T, 30T and 45T. . It is applicable to materials and stationary and portable hardness testing machines.

Attention is drawn to the fact that the use of tungsten carbide composite for ball recesses is considered the standard type of Rockwell recess ball. Steel recess balls are only allowed to continue to be used if they comply with Annex A.

This is one of the Rockwell test three-part international standard for metallic materials. The other two parts are verification and calibration of Test machines and indentations, Calibration of Reference blocks.

The documents, in whole or in part, are normatively referenced in this document and are indispensable for its implementation. For dated references, only the edition mentioned is valid. For undated references, the most recent edition of the cited document (including any changes) applies.

Implementation of ISO 6508 Standard

An indentation of the specified size, shape and material is forced into the surface of a test specimen under two levels of force using special conditions. Additional force is applied and the initial indentation depth is measured, followed by the application and removal of a specified additional force, returning to the initial force. The final indentation depth is then measured and the Rockwell hardness value is derived from the difference h in the final and initial indentation depths and the two constants N and S.

ISO 6508 Testing Machine

The testing machine will be able to apply test forces for some or all of the Rockwell hardness scales, realizing a laboratory temperature requirement of 10 °C to 3 °C, and will comply with all requirements defined in ISO 5-6508.

The spherical conical diamond tip shall conform to ISO 6508 -2, with an inclusive angle of 1 20° and a radius of curvature at the tip of 0,2 mm. Diamond indentations will be certified for use for both. The ball recess shall be tungsten carbide composite according to ISO 6508 -2, with a diameter of 1,587 5 mm or 3,175 mm.

ISO 6508 Test Surface

The test may be performed on the product and a flat surface that has been burned from oxide deposits, foreign matter, and lubricants, unless otherwise specified in or material standards. An exception is made for reactive metals such as titanium, which may adhere to the recess. In such cases, a suitable lubricant such as kerosene can be used. Lubricant usage will be reported in the test report.

Preparation should be done in such a way that any change in surface hardness, for example due to overheating or cold working, is minimized.

The thickness of the test piece or layer under test shall be at least 10 times the permanent indentation depth for diamond indentations and at least 15 times the permanent indentation depth for ball indentations.

Generally, no deformation should be visible on the back of the test piece after testing, but not all such signs are indicative of a bad test.

Eurolab provides service to manufacturers and retailers in hardness tests with its technological infrastructure.
