EN ISO 7622-1 specifies a method for determining the elongation of steel cords forming the carcass of conveyor belts when subjected to a force corresponding to 10% and 60% of the specified tensile strength. Applies to steel carcass conveyor belts only.
This test method is designed to verify, through destructive testing, the elongation properties of the steel cords that make up the conveyor belt carcass. Since it is a destructive test, it is used only in case of lawsuit or in cases where a certificate of conformity is not given by the cord manufacturer.
There may be differences in elongation between crude steel cords and rubber-coated steel cords. For this reason, the values determined according to this method and the values specified in a certificate of the cord manufacturer may differ.
The traction test is performed on a steel cord taken from the carcass of the belt. Determination of elongation is measured at 10% and 60% of the specified tensile strength using an extensometer, for example using a dynamometer whose jaw disengagement rate is specified and held constant.
Since the elongation of steel cords is usually very low, delicate but sensitive extensometers should be used, which can be damaged if the test specimen is broken. The measurement is therefore limited to 60% of the specified tensile strength.
