The values obtained from the measurements (corrosion rates for the first year of exposure) are intended to be used as classification criteria for the assessment of atmospheric corrosiveness according to EN ISO 9223.
Characterization by corrosivity of an atmospheric corrosion test site or a service location can be performed by determining the corrosion rate (wear determination) of standard samples exposed to the atmosphere for one year at that location.
Standard samples are flat plate samples of four standard structural materials: aluminum, copper, steel, and zinc. This method represents an economical way of assessing corrosivity, taking into account all local environmental effects.
