EN ISO 945 Microstructure of Cast Irons - Standard Test for Graphite Classification by Visual Analysis

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN ISO 945 testing. This standard specifies a method for classifying the microstructure of graphite in cast irons by comparative visual analysis.

EN ISO 945 Microstructure of Cast Irons - Standard Test for Graphite Classification by Visual Analysis

The purpose of this standard is to provide information about the graphite classification method. It is not intended to provide information on the suitability of cast iron types and grades for any particular application.

Specific grades of materials are mainly determined by mechanical properties and, in the case of austenitic and wear-resistant cast irons, by their chemical composition. Interpretation of graphite form and size does not allow a statistically valid statement regarding the fulfillment of the requirements specified in the relevant material standard.

The microstructure representation is a useful feature that provides a tool to classify graphite form, distribution and size in cast irons.

Graphite classification by visual analysis is a well-established method well recognized in the foundry industry as a means of quickly determining the overall graphite microstructure of a cast iron casting.

When sampling from a casting, it is essential to pay attention to the ground, wall thickness, distance from the surface and the presence of chills. The location of the sample in the casting should be recorded in a report. If more than one casting is being examined, each casting will be sampled from the same location for comparability purposes. The location of the metallographic sample should be agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser.

The area of the polished surface to be examined will be sufficient to give a true representation of the graphite structure. Careful grinding and polishing of the specimens should be done so that the graphite particles appear in their original shape, size and distribution. Improper grinding and polishing can cause an unacceptable change in the microstructure. If necessary, the polishing method can be agreed between the manufacturer and the purchaser.
