EN 12373-1 Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys - Testing for Protective Anodic Oxidation Coatings

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of EN 12373-1 test. This Part of this European Standard describes a method for determining decorative and protective anodic oxidation coatings on aluminium. It can be applied to the specification of coatings consisting mainly of aluminum oxide, formed on aluminum by an electrolytic oxidation process in which the aluminum acts as the anode.

EN 12373-1 Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys - Testing for Protective Anodic Oxidation Coatings

Does not apply to the specification of:

  • Barrier layer type non-porous oxide coatings;
  • Coatings produced by chromic acid or phosphoric acid anodizing;
  • Oxide coatings intended solely to prepare the substrate for subsequent applications of organic coatings or electrodeposition of metals;
  • “Hard anodized” coatings used primarily for engineering purposes, where wear and corrosion resistance are key features.

The quality of the hydrothermal insulation is of great importance and sealing is always important, whether specified or not, except where an unsealed or cold-impregnated coating is expressly requested.

Anodized materials shall be free from visible defects on important surfaces when viewed from a distance of not less than 5 m in exterior architectural applications, 3 m in interior architectural applications, or 0,5 m in decorative applications. If requested by the buyer, the positions and maximum dimensions of the contact marks will be agreed upon between the anodiser and the buyer.

Color and surface texture and their tolerances will be determined by the buyer. If necessary for matching purposes, acceptable variation limits will be defined by at least two agreed samples.

Anodized aluminum has double reflection from the surfaces of the oxidation layer and the base metal. Therefore, when matching color samples, they should be kept in the same plane and viewed as close to normal as possible, with the working direction (e.g. rolling, extruding or machining direction) always the same. A diffuse lighting source will be placed above and behind the viewer.

Unless otherwise agreed, colors will be compared from a northern direction in diffuse daylight. If colored coatings will be used in artificial light, this illumination will be used for color comparison purposes.

To evaluate color fastness for outdoor applications, only outdoor exposure under conditions comparable to actual service use is satisfactory. Accelerated testing is only suitable for quality control testing of colored anodic oxidation coatings where the fastness of the particular coloring system has already been determined by outdoor exposure tests.
