The method is valid only for the part of the stress-strain curve in the plastic range where the curve is continuous and monotonous.

It is used to give reproducible results on materials with a jagged stress-strain curve in the work-hardening range (materials showing the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect, eg plastic strain).

In the previous edition of this standard, it was not necessary to subtract the elastic strain from the total strain to calculate the actual strain if it was less than 10% of the total strain.

In this standard, elastic strain is subtracted from the total strain to calculate the actual strain, now called "true plastic strain".
