ISO 10289 Methods for Corrosion Testing of Metallic and Other Inorganic Coatings on Metallic Substrates - Evaluation of Test Specimens and Manufactured Articles Subjected to Corrosion Tests

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 10289 testing. The ISO 10289 standard, developed by the international standards organization (ISO), specifies a method for assessing the condition of decorative and protective metallic and inorganic coated panels or objects that have been exposed to corrosive environments for testing or other purposes.

This International Standard recognizes that the degree of protection can be evaluated objectively according to article 6. However, the assessment of appearance depends on many subjective factors.

The edges of test panels or components can be protected, for example, with tape or wax (paraffin), if it is an agreed part of the test and recorded in the test report. This is important if samples are being cut from larger pieces and have exposed uncoated edges.

The grading method described in this International Standard recognizes that decorative and protective metallic and inorganic coatings on metallic substrates can be either anodic or cathodic with respect to the substrate.

Two considerations will be made in grading these coatings for their corrosion effects:

  • The ability of the coating to protect the substrate from corrosion, thereby preventing degradation of the base metal;
  • The ability to maintain the integrity of the coating and thus provide a satisfactory appearance.

Defects on a panel or object should be noted prior to exposure testing and due care should be taken when evaluating the results of the inspection. Intentional defects can also be introduced as part of a testing program.
