ISO 12737 specifies the ISO method for determining the plane-strain fracture toughness of homogeneous metallic materials using a fatigue-notched and previously cracked specimen, which is subjected to gradually increasing crack displacement force.
The test machine shall be calibrated to ISO 7500-1 and shall be at least grade 1. The testing machine shall have provisions for the signature recording of the force applied to the specimen. Alternatively, a computer data acquisition system can be used to record force and displacement for subsequent analysis.
Whenever possible, the fatigue machine and force indicator device shall be statically calibrated in accordance with ISO 7500-1 and have a grade of at least 2. If the machine cannot be statically calibrated, the applied force will be known as ± 2,5%.
Careful alignment of specimen and fixture is necessary to encourage flat fatigue cracks. Fixation shall be such that the stress distribution is uniform throughout the thickness of the specimen and symmetrical about the probable crack plane.
The displacement meter electrical output should represent the relative displacement of the two fully inserted gauge positions covering the notch lip. The displacement gauge and the design of the blade edges must allow free rotation of the contact points between the gauge and the sample.
