ISO 1463 Metallic and Oxide Coatings - Measurement of Coating Thickness - Microscopic Method

This standard specifies a method for measuring local thicknesses of metallic coatings, oxide layers, and porcelain or vitreous enamel coatings by microscopic examination of cross-sections using an optical microscope.

A portion of the test sample is cut and mounted. The assembled section is prepared with appropriate grinding, polishing and etching techniques. The thickness of the coating section is measured by means of a calibrated scale.

If the coating or substrate has a rough surface, one or both of the interfaces limiting the coating cross-section may be too irregular to allow accurate measurement.

If the section plane is not perpendicular to the pavement plane, the measured thickness will be greater than the actual thickness; for example, an inclination of 10° to the vertical will contribute to an error of 1,5%.

Dentrimental deformation of the veneer may result from excessive temperature or pressure during assembly and preparation of sections of soft veneers or low-melting veneers, as well as from excessive wear of brittle materials during the preparation of sections.

Overlap of the test specimen protects the coating edges during the preparation of the sections, thus preventing erroneous measurement. Removal of coating material during surface preparation for overcoating may result in under-thickness measurement.
