ISO 148-1 Metallic Materials - Charpy Impact Test - Part 1: Test Method

This part of the ISO 148-1 standard, developed by the International Standards Organization (ISO), describes the Charpy pendulum impact test method to detect the energy absorbed in the impact test of metallic materials. This standard has been published in our country by the Turkish Standards Institute with the following title: TS EN ISO 148-1 Metallic materials - Charpy impact test - Part 1: Test method.

Charpy impact test, or test The Charpy V-notch test is a high strain rate test. During this test, a pendulum rotated at a certain height is multiplied by a standard notched sample and the impact trace is examined. With the hit test, the amount of energy absorbed by the sample during the hit is measured. The example of the standard Charpy-V notch is a 55-millimeter long, 10-millimeter rectangle. It has a 0,25 millimeter deep notch on one side with a 2 millimeter tip radius.

The amount of energy absorbed by the test sample during breakage is measured and this value is an indication of the notch toughness of the material. The pendulum swings during the test, and the height of the swing is a measure of the amount of energy absorbed in breaking the sample. In general, the test is repeated three times and the results are averaged. Alternatively, tests are performed at various temperatures to create a transition curve.

The ISO 148-1 standard describes the V-notch and U-notch Cahrpy test methods. With these tests, it is understood whether a metal can be classified as brittle or ductile. A brittle metal absorbs a small amount of energy during testing, while a hard ductile metal absorbs a large amount of energy. The appearance of a fractured surface gives information about the type of fracture that has occurred. A brittle refraction is bright and crystalline, while a ductile refraction is dull and fibrous.

Among the services provided by our organization within the framework of metallic testing services, there are also ISO 148-1 standard tests.
