ISO 18203 Steel - Standard Test for Determining the Thickness of Surface Hardened Layers

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 18203 standard. ISO 18203 specifies a method for measuring the surface hardening depth, the nitriding hardness depth, and the overall thickness of the surface hardening depth achieved, for example thermal (flame and induction hardening, electron beam hardening, laser beam hardening, etc.) or thermochemical (carbonitriding, carburizing and hardening, hardening and nitriding etc.) treatment.

ISO 18203 Steel - Standard Test for Determining the Thickness of Surface Hardened Layers

The hardening depth, surface hardening depth, and nitriding hardness depth are determined from the hardness gradient on a cross section perpendicular to the surface. They are graphically derived from a curve representing the change in hardness as a function of distance from the surface of the part.

The total thickness of the surface hardening depth is determined from the observed structure change by the micrographic method or by measuring the hardness change. The composite layer thickness is determined from the chemical compound layer observed by the microscopic method.

To determine Vickers hardness, the hardness tester must be verified and calibrated according to ISO 6507-2.
